Will PC Gamers OUTNUMBER Console Gamers In A Few Years?

Well, perhaps it’s way too far-fetched to predict that PC gaming will surpass consoles as the market leader in gaming software.

However, the research firm DFC Intelligence speculates that PC gaming will see a significant market surge in the next few years. And this poses the question…

To what can the PC game and application developers attribute this sudden rise?

“A major driver of industry growth is not just software but hardware,” said DFC analyst David Cole. “The emergence of eSports and virtual reality is driving consumers to buy high end PC systems to not only play games, but watch others playing games.”

The Rise And Rise Of E-Sports

While e-sports is not a new phenomenon or trend, its popularity has grown over the years with global competitions that attract thousands of people and has become highly lucrative for gamers and game companies alike.

Phil Spencer of Microsoft’s Xbox division believes e-sports will be just as popular as real-life sports in the near future.

“You look at the number of people who play games, you look at the different platforms people are playing on, you look at the money that’s pouring in, the broadcasts,” said Spencerat the recent Halo World Championship tournament in Hollywood, CA. “I think there’s no cap to what esports can become. esports is going to be as big as regular sports.”

It’s difficult to disagree with him when The Halo World Championship received regular coverage on ESPN. On the flip side, over a million people signed up to play in the recent FIFA Interactive World Cup hosted by global soccer body FIFA and Electronic Arts’ EA Sports division.

Virtual Reality, Real Dollars

VR has also been the hot-topic point of discussion in technology over the past two years thanks to numerous advancements that have made the technology more affordable for consumers.
